Stage 1 & Stage 2 Pathway

Stage 1: Introduction to Phlebotomy (2 Days)

Delivery:

1 day theory (online or face-to-face)

1 day face-to-face practical training

This 2-day introductory phlebotomy course is designed for individuals looking to begin a career in phlebotomy or enhance their clinical skills. The course combines essential theory with hands-on practical training, giving learners the confidence and competence to progress to live clinical practice.

Theory Training (Day 1)

Prior to the training, learners will receive comprehensive course materials or online access to study resources to support pre-course preparation.
The theory session is delivered by experienced trainers and provides an in-depth understanding of:

The scientific and technical principles of phlebotomy

Roles and professional responsibilities of a phlebotomist

Infection control, patient safety, and consent

Patient preparation and post-procedure aftercare

This theory day can be completed online or in person, offering flexibility to suit learner preferences.

Practical Training (Day 2)

Following the theory component, learners attend a classroom-based practical session focused on developing core blood collection skills.

Practical training includes:

Hands-on practice using advanced, life-like phlebotomy mannequins

Step-by-step guidance on venepuncture techniques

Emphasis on safety, accuracy, and professional practice

Stage 2: Live Bloods Clinic – Phlebotomy Practice

Entry Requirement:

Successful completion of Stage 1 – Introduction to Phlebotomy

Stage 2 provides learners with the opportunity to transition from simulated practice to real clinical experience.

What Stage 2 Includes

Live blood collection sessions in an NHS clinical setting

Training and supervision by qualified NHS professionals

One-to-one supervision to ensure safe and effective practice

Formal assessment of knowledge and skills

Learners are assessed against the Skills for Health CHS132 National Occupational Standard for Obtaining Venous Blood Samples.

Upon successful completion, learners will receive a Certificate of Competency, recognising their ability to perform venepuncture safely in a clinical environment.


Important Requirement

All participants must have a valid Hepatitis B vaccination before attending Stage 2.
